Bro, do you even progressive refinement?
No but seriously, I see a shit ton of pictures with no anti-aliasing and/or shit DoF settings. come on, is it that hard?

It's not hard, but I remember back in the day, that I didn't use it simply because I didn't know it existed =P

It was one of the first things that I learned lol
Don't remember if it was in one of Valve tutorials or Argodaemon ones.

Defiantly not the valve tutorials lol

They were helpful, but Argodaemon covers more complex stuff (Valve didn't really mention the element viewer that much for example, which I basically use every time)

Well, the valve tutorials are basically just to get started, which they do very well.
I just know for a fact that the camera settings were never mentioned.

That doesn't mean that you don't have to use more than the default 8 samples (64 is the sweet spot for quality and performance, but now I usually use 256, with a few exceptions in which I use all 1024, like in my last image).
Still, I feel your pain. Do you have an integrated GPU? I had one and a lot of things didn't work of were broken, it was so annoying

I have an HP laptop with an intel core I3.

as faas sampling goes, the only real difference I have is that it makes the DOF go in reverse XD, that and makes my computer shit itself during render.

Rendering in 4K+ with Sampling,DOF, and Moblur at max, 56+ props, 2+ characters, 40+ lights(Shadows and volumetrics included), 75% aperture, and 60% camera zoom, Equates to about a 3Day layoff for me.(Disregarding whatever else is in the map from other projects.)

I had an i3 2350m. It would have been nice if it had a dedicated GPU, but it didn't so it was pretty much shite :/
The longest render I did on it was probably that one image I rendered at 4320p (don't remember DoF and MB samples though, probably 256 because of the high resolution). It took around 20-30 minutes lol
Still I've never used that much stuff, a lot of models sometimes but not that many lights..
Now with the i7 4790k and GTX 970 it takes nothing to render stuff compared to that i3+iGPU. The last animation which was 5 seconds (720p24fps) with 1024 DoF samples and 256 Motion Blur samples took only 30 minutes (I thought it would take way more, seems like I've heavily underestimated my own computer)..

Well, if you'll ever need some help with rendering heavy stuff (maybe also with SSAO and/or uber lights), feel free to contact me anytime. I'm willing to help :3

I've since made charts notarizing my laptops exact limits and what combination of items I can and cannot do.

I can put down about 300 models(roughly making a few square blocks of ponyville with discopers props), with no more than 2-3 shded lights or bout 6 unshaded. Yada yada I figured out stuff and things XD

And the only reason why I learned about this stuff Is I scene-build A LOT, aside from making an ungodly amount of pics(90% of which never get online), So I burn through a lt of models, sceneprops because of my building parts of the world even if they are never even seen in the image(more than once... almost all the time really)

But uh, thanks I'll keep note of your help, for sure.

I've neved had that many models (maybe I've reached 200-250ish but just once), my scene builds are usually small ones with some lights (it's easy to reach source limit of 8 shadowed lights though which is very annoying). Pretty basic and simple, but they do the job so yeah..

Everything you see on my deviantart page is all I've ever did with SFM (there are like 5 pictures that I haven't uploaded three are nsfw lol, I even kinda enjoyed making them, mainly because they were different than what I usually make, and of course random sessions of discarded projects I've started working on but never finished, or just quit, laying in my sfm saves folder).
It's not that easy for me to find ideas unfortunately :c
